At Leigh St Peter’s CE Primary School, we have a dedicated and highly trained safeguarding team who work together to ensure that every child is safe, happy and supported.
Our safeguarding team work closely with children, families, staff and external agencies to provide early help, support wellbeing and respond swiftly to any concerns. We are committed to maintaining a culture of vigilance where children feel listened to, valued and protected, and where safeguarding remains at the heart of everything we do.

Early Help in Wigan provides timely support for children, young people, and families, with referrals managed through the Early Help Hub to ensure coordinated, multi-agency assistance.
What is Early Help?
Early Help in Wigan is a framework designed to provide support at the earliest opportunity to prevent issues from escalating and reduce the need for statutory interventions. It focuses on the needs of the whole family, addressing challenges such as parenting difficulties, child mental health, education, and social wellbeing.
Support can range from advice and guidance to multi-agency coordinated plans with a lead professional, known as a Family Help Worker.
Referral Process For Professionals
- Initial Assessment: Professionals should first complete a Short Early Help Assessment to determine if a Family Help Worker is required.
- Submitting a Referral: Referrals are made via the online professional referral form on the Wigan Council website or by contacting the Children’s First Partnership Hub at 01942 828300, available 24/7.
- Consent: Family consent is generally required before making a referral unless it would increase risk to the child.
- Triage and System Checks: The Early Help Hub conducts checks across council and education systems to gain a holistic view of the child or young person’s needs.
- Signposting and Support: Based on the assessment, the Hub can signpost families to appropriate services such as CAMHS, Start Well, Sensoriel, or targeted youth support
