At Leigh St Peter’s CE Primary School, we use the School Literacy Network Handwriting Scheme to provide a consistent, progressive and research-informed approach to the teaching of handwriting. The scheme is designed to help every child develop fluent, legible and automatic handwriting, enabling them to communicate effectively and achieve success across the curriculum.
We believe that handwriting is a fundamental life skill and an essential component of literacy. When handwriting becomes automatic, pupils are able to devote more of their attention to the composition, organisation and quality of their writing. Through explicit teaching, regular practice and high expectations, we ensure that all pupils develop confidence, accuracy and pride in their presentation.
The School Literacy Network Handwriting Scheme provides a clear progression from early mark-making and print formation through to pre-cursive, cursive and fully joined handwriting. Children are taught the correct formation of letters, efficient pencil grip, appropriate letter size and orientation, spacing between words, and the fluency required for sustained writing. Each stage builds systematically on prior learning, ensuring that pupils develop secure habits that support long-term success.
Our approach is underpinned by the understanding that handwriting is both a physical and cognitive process. Pupils are given regular opportunities to practise and refine their skills through carefully structured lessons, teacher modelling and purposeful application across the wider curriculum. Consistent handwriting expectations are embedded throughout school so that children can transfer and apply their skills in all areas of learning.
In keeping with our Christian vision, “Let Your Light Shine” (Matthew 5:16), we encourage pupils to take pride in their work, demonstrate perseverance when developing new skills and strive for excellence in their presentation. We want every child to see themselves as a successful writer and to understand that clear, fluent handwriting is an important tool that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
