What is PREVENT?
Prevent is part of the UK’s safeguarding framework and aims to protect children, young people and adults who may be vulnerable to radicalisation or being drawn into extremism and terrorism. It works in the same way as other safeguarding processes by identifying concerns early, providing appropriate support, and helping individuals build resilience to harmful influences. Schools, colleges and other public services have a legal duty to be alert to signs of radicalisation and to take action when concerns arise. Prevent is not about criminalising people; it is about keeping individuals and communities safe, promoting positive relationships, and ensuring that vulnerable people receive the help and support they need before risks escalate.
How to Report a Prevent Concern
If you are concerned that a child, young person or adult may be at risk of radicalisation or extremism, you should report your concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). The DSL will assess the information and, where appropriate, make a referral to Prevent. Prevent is part of the Government’s safeguarding strategy and aims to provide early support to individuals who may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.
