Subject Leader: Miss J Smith
PE and sports is very important to us at Leigh St Peter’s Primary School. Children are encourage to be active at different times throughout the week, this includes PE lessons, break and lunch times and by completing the daily mile. We allow children to wear black trainers, as part of their uniforms, to allow them to be physically active at break and dinner. As well as reducing levels of the body’s stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, exercise, also stimulates the production of endorphins, chemicals in the brain that are the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.
In Reception the children use outdoor play to help keep them healthy.
In Year 1- Year 3 the children have a full afternoon of PE. .
This academic year Year 4 have had additional swimming practice for half the year. This is to help us manage the loss of swimming tuition for Year 5 and Year 6 during COVID.
In Year 5 and Year 6 they have at least a term of swimming with catch up sessions in the final term. For some of the year they will attend the local sport centre and have access to specialist sports coaches and equipment. For the rest of the year they will have the opportunity to have access to sports that they would not normally access eg fencing and archery. We feel this is important for our children due to the limited variety and access to local clubs. This model has changed slightly this academic year (21-22) due to the sports centre being used for a vaccination centre.
During lunch time we provide support from a local provider for the children to access sports and games.
On the PE days children can come to school in their school PE kits. If they don’t have a school agreed PE kit they must come in their uniform and we will provide one.
The school PE kit is black jogging bottoms, black trainers, white t-shirt. They may wear a plain black tracksuit top, however, if they don’t have one they must wear their school jumper.
Please see attached the rota for PE days. This is the day that your child needs to bring in their PE kit.
